Rail Transit Standards Development

Chair: Patrick Nowakowski, APTA Rail Standards Policy and Planning Committee

 

For the last four years, the rail transit standards task force has published and now maintains over 90 individual rail transit system standards and recommended practices. These documents are available as a set on a CD-ROM or they can be downloaded individually from this web site (see link below).  These industry standards and recommended practices are currently in the process of being implemented by the rail transit industry.  Full implementation will be completed by October 2006.

 

Published Rail Standards

 

Currently, there are five APTA Rail Transit Standards Development Committees. The membership of these five committees consists of more than 240 volunteers from railroads, suppliers, consultants, rail labor unions and government safety oversight organizations. They are:

Over the course of the next year, the Rail Transit Standards program intends to develop and approve the following documents:

 

Traction Elevator Design Guidelines;

Moving Walkway Design Guidelines;

Vintage Trolley Standard;

Standard for Inspection and Maintenance of Auxiliary Power Systems;

Heavy Rail Vehicle Crashworthiness Standard (ASME);

Light Rail Vehicle Crashworthiness Standard (ASME).
