SDOC Objectives 

 

1. Increase the awareness and understanding of public transportation operators and suppliers of the value of utilizing standards in the pubic transportation industry.  Build active support and participation among these operators and suppliers in the APTA standards development program. 

2. Build a working relationship with all APTA standards policy and planning committees for the purpose of determining and managing the overall direction and funding of APTA’s standards development program to include:

  • The establishment of project and funding priorities,
  • The organization of an appropriate infrastructure within the industry to develop and implement consensus based standards,
  • The development of mechanisms for the coordination and interface of standards among these committees and groups.

3. Develop support among key federal and state governmental agencies for the APTA standards development program, and where appropriate gain their financial participation in the development and deployment of standards in the public transportation industry.

4. Promote the development of transit standards, as appropriate, by standards development organizations (SDOs) outside the transit industry (domestically and internationally) and monitor the ongoing transit standards development activities of these organizations in order to avoid duplication, inconsistency and conflicts with APTA’s programs and to ensure that the standards they develop are appropriate for the public transportation industry in North America. 

5. Provide policy direction to the APTA staff responsible for the development and implementation of the standards development program at APTA and oversee the funding, budgeting and execution of these programs.
